Partially implicit Runge-Kutta methods for wave-like equations
2012
In this work we present a new class of Runge-Kutta (RK) methods for solving systems of hyperbolic equations with a particular structure, generalization of a wave-equation. The new methods are {\it partially implicit} in the sense that a proper subset of the equations of the system contains some terms which are treated implicitly. These methods can be viewed as a particular case of the implicit-explicit (IMEX) RK methods for systems of equations with wave-like structure. For these systems, the optimal methods with the new structure are easier to derive than the IMEX ones, specially when aiming at higher-order (up to fourth-order in this work). The methods are constructed considering the clas…
Finite propagation speed for solutions of the wave equation on metric graphs
2012
We provide a class of self-adjoint Laplace operators on metric graphs with the property that the solutions of the associated wave equation satisfy the finite propagation speed property. The proof uses energy methods, which are adaptions of corresponding methods for smooth manifolds.
Uniqueness and stability of an inverse problem for a semi-linear wave equation
2020
We consider the recovery of a potential associated with a semi-linear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, $n\geq 1$. We show a H\"older stability estimate for the recovery of an unknown potential $a$ of the wave equation $\square u +a u^m=0$ from its Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We show that an unknown potential $a(x,t)$, supported in $\Omega\times[t_1,t_2]$, of the wave equation $\square u +a u^m=0$ can be recovered in a H\"older stable way from the map $u|_{\partial \Omega\times [0,T]}\mapsto \langle\psi,\partial_\nu u|_{\partial \Omega\times [0,T]}\rangle_{L^2(\partial \Omega\times [0,T])}$. This data is equivalent to the inner product of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map with a measurement fun…
A posteriori error estimates for Webster's equation in wave propagation
2015
We consider a generalised Webster’s equation for describing wave propagation in curved tubular structures such as variable diameter acoustic wave guides. Webster’s equation in generalised form has been rigorously derived in a previous article starting from the wave equation, and it approximates cross-sectional averages of the propagating wave. Here, the approximation error is estimated by an a posteriori technique. peerReviewed
Acoustic wave guides as infinite-dimensional dynamical systems
2015
We prove the unique solvability, passivity/conservativity and some regularity results of two mathematical models for acoustic wave propagation in curved, variable diameter tubular structures of finite length. The first of the models is the generalised Webster's model that includes dissipation and curvature of the 1D waveguide. The second model is the scattering passive, boundary controlled wave equation on 3D waveguides. The two models are treated in an unified fashion so that the results on the wave equation reduce to the corresponding results of approximating Webster's model at the limit of vanishing waveguide intersection.
